This Nashville real estate office needed design work.

The 'before' pictures make that very clear. Enter Elizabeth Stanton Designs. She has a knack for turning the mundane into a beautiful work of art.

Elizabeth fashioned a comfy, yet minimal design that was budget-friendly for the small company.

What do winter family photos looks like? http://samanthanelsonphotography.com/blog/2016/12/what-do-winter-family-photos-look-like (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=471667022867875"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

Can I book family photos in the winter?

_DSC0012Caplinger_DSC0012Caplinger

(This family did, and ahem, their pictures were amazing! Side note: this was the coldest weather day...but you'd never guess it by these pictures.)

Can you take photos in the winter without giant parkas and still look stylish?

So many families want to book pictures in the fall when the leaves are changing colors and sweaters and boots just come back in style.  But, they don't because life gets hectic.

Then, December rolls around and life couldn't feel more hectic. They're preparing for the holidays, and they think,

"It's too cold for pictures now. I'll wait until summer--or even next fall."

Well, I'll just have you know, every time a family says that, a fairy dies. True story.

Don't put it off any longer.

Do you know how much your kids' faces change in a year?!

Let's book a session together. January is cold, sure...but there are ways to work with the weather, dress stylish, and still get those photos you know you need.

Besides...hot cocoa is always a good bribe for pretty smiles in family photos.

No Makeup Mondays: Meet Danielle, Josee, and Julia http://samanthanelsonphotography.com/blog/2016/11/no-makeup-mondays-meet-danielle-josee-julia (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=471667022867875"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

If you've never heard about The Real Me Photoshoot, you may want to start here.
Hey friend, thanks for being here today.

It's been a whopper of a week for most of us.

And I have to be honest, it's left me feeling a little helpless and overwhelmed.

I'm no stranger to these two pesky feelings. They've poked around in my life for a few months now, ever since our family experienced an unexpected layoff.

It's one thing to have your inner world flipped upside down, it's another when your outer world seems to want to match that, then raise it by 1000%.

Deep breath.
Deep breaths.
For the past few months.
For today.

I've found that when those emotions swell within me, my best course of action is to do...to create...to love...to share. These, of course, are the ways I counterbalance life. They are not right or wrong. They are not prescriptions. They may be different from your reflexes in the hardships of life right now. We are all doing the best we can.

I see that in you. Let's see that in each other.

These three women are tackling life just like us today. As we see them, in all of their beauty, may our day be changed for the better. Happy Monday.

1. First, meet Danielle:

Danielle feels alive when she's singing and worshipping. She NEVER goes without makeup, so this shoot was a big step for her in uncovering, in vulnerability, in standing in front of the world untethered. She wanted to be part of the Real Me Photoshoot because she is passionate about helping women experience freedom from daily pressures of what the world demands regarding image.

Her top three junk foods are Tiramisu, Reese's PB cups, and stuffed crust pizza. (Amen to that last one!)

Want to hear Danielle sing? Check out her video here.

2. Next up, meet Josee:

Josee is a nurse. She'd love to travel outside the country. If you raided her Netflix account, you may see Pretty Little Liars queued up. (Well, that is what it was in April. You'll have to ask her what she's watching now!)  Her favorite IG account to follow is @becomingme.tv.

Having walked through seasons of depression and anxiety, she wanted to be a part of the Real Me Photoshoot to encourage and empower other women. She goes without makeup 3-4 days a week, but knows that her anxiety battles have had a purpose. She's walking proof of that.

When I met Josee, I told her she seemed peaceful. She looked at me with a slow smile and said she's been praying to connect more to that side of herself. It's funny how people notice our strides often before we see it in ourselves.

3. Lastly, may I introduce Julia?

Julia is a force, full of ideas and convictions and sage wisdom.

She goes without makeup most days, and feels most comfortable in her skin when she's at home surrounded by girlfriends. She wanted to be a part of The Real Me Photoshoot because she wholeheartedly believes that women are beautiful just the way they are.

Her favorite part of herself is her sense of humor. Her favorite book is The War of Art.

She is playful and serious and chatty and quiet. She is complex and yet simple. She is Mary Poppins and Malcolm X; her dichotomy is her beauty. She loves people and loves being loved...that what she wants you to know.

She hosted a Known group called The Bridge to Racial Unity. She's doing it again at the beginning of the new year. Connect with her on Known's FB page for more info.

I'll leave you with this beautiful poem called Human Family, by Maya Angelou. It is my heart today. They are not cheesy words meant to tie a pretty bow on life. They are hope to my confused and tender heart. I pray you find the same, if you are searching.

Human Family

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.

I've sailed upon the seven seas
and stopped in every land,
I've seen the wonders of the world
not yet one common man.

I know ten thousand women
called Jane and Mary Jane,
but I've not seen any two
who really were the same.

Mirror twins are different
although their features jibe,
and lovers think quite different thoughts
while lying side by side.

We love and lose in China,
we weep on England's moors,
and laugh and moan in Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish shores.

We seek success in Finland,
are born and die in Maine.
In minor ways we differ,
in major we're the same.

I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

Things to consider if you haven't done family photos yet http://samanthanelsonphotography.com/blog/2016/11/things-to-consider-if-you-havent-done-family-photos-yet (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=471667022867875"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

Everyone needs updated family photos, right? We can agree on that, can't we?

Ok, ok...

I know I'm a biased source. I mean, a photographer telling you how important family photos are seems a little fishy, like a bank convincing you why the envelope in your bedside table is not a great place to keep your money. I have a vested interest, yes, but it still doesn't mean that the banks and I don't have a valid point.

Here are some things to consider if you haven't done family photos, yet.

1. The beautiful fall colors will soon be gone.

*Side note...Those middle photos make me laugh every time!! The second photo is what #reallife brotherhood looks like. The third photo is #photography brotherhood.

2. The weather is getting colder, and outfit choices will be limited. Winter parkas are stylish and all, but wouldn't long sleeve shirts and fall blankets be more comfortable for photos? And let's face it, quivering, purple lips are hard to photoshop.

_DSC0973_DSC0973

3. They're getting older. Your family. Your kids. Your babies.

Of course, there's no pressure.

Just your kids growing up before your eyes...no biggie.

_DSC0813_DSC0813

4. You'll need Christmas cards soon!!!

_DSC0919_DSC0919

Of course, this entire article was just tongue in cheek, because I think taking pictures and having fun should be synonymous...and very low pressure.

I'll be here this fall or next spring, or whenever life slows down long enough for you to get your photos done.

**Big thank you to these brothers for helping make this blog post way cuter than my words could ever make it.

If you've never heard about The Real Me Photoshoot, you may want to start here.
There's something beautiful about being known, about sharing your story, and being embraced by others even when we share the scary, hidden parts of ourselves.

Have you ever experienced being known in that way?

It's No Makeup Labor Day Monday.

Meet Brittanie:
_DSC0193Ryleigh_DSC0193Ryleigh _DSC0133Ryleigh_DSC0133Ryleigh _DSC0100Ryleigh_DSC0100Ryleigh _DSC0158Ryleigh_DSC0158Ryleigh _DSC0171Ryleigh_DSC0171Ryleigh _DSC0076Ryleigh_DSC0076Ryleigh _DSC0070Ryleigh_DSC0070Ryleigh _DSC0174Ryleigh_DSC0174Ryleigh

Brittanie is gorgeous, and tall, and independent. She is young and stunning, and just by looking at her, you'd never imagine that she experienced anything but pure joy and fun her entire life.

So, when she began sharing the heartbreak of losing the chance to play soccer competitively due to a back injury, I was intrigued. How could this young girl already have so much wisdom about identity, knowledge of who she is, and resilience despite terrible circumstances? How could she know about finding joy in the midst of disappointment--already??

It took me a lifetime to understand those lessons.

People are so much more than your first glance will divulge to you. People around you have stories. They have learned stuff--despite their age. Ask them. Share your journey.

We all need to hear it.

Keep being brave with your story, Samantha

It's Monday again; welcome back, friend!

Raise your coffee cups, folks! Here's a toast to inner beauty, authenticity, and women who uplift other women!!

It's No Makeup Monday.

When I met Michelle during this shoot, she had left a 10 yr relationship and was at a crossroads. In fact, one of the things she was doing was letting go of the need to have it all figured out! She had been  wondering if the right partner would ever come along and all the other things we women think about: kids, anxiety, feeing not good enough.

When she found out that I was from Hawaii, she talked wistfully about how she had always wanted to live there.
Well guess what?
All these months later, she's found a way to do that! She's leaving on an adventure of a lifetime and headed toward island paradise to work as a traveling nurse.

She's a reminder to me that sometimes it's better not to wish...but to act. It takes courage to leave what you know...but it's worse to never have tried.

Act today. Your adventure is a choice away.

Keep being brave with your story, Samantha

Why photoshoots are easy for kids http://samanthanelsonphotography.com/blog/2016/8/why-photoshoots-are-easy-for-kids

This is Little Miss R.

_DSC0074Libby_DSC0074Libby

She didn't love being in front of the camera, or asked to sit still.

_DSC0199Libby_DSC0199Libby

She didn't love changing into the frilly outfits that mom picked out.

She just wanted to play and throw rocks.

And that's why photoshoots are easy for kids.

They can easily forget the camera is there and just...play. They don't worry about their makeup or their wardrobe color scheme. They don't have all the voices of insecurity that inhibit and make them stiffen up. They just play and ignore the photographer, and sometimes those make the best kinds of photos.

Now, me, on the other hand?

Well, I was a sweaty mess, chasing her around like a National Geographic photographer chases a rare bird that hardly ever looks up from its play. But that's what good photographers do. They make sure their subjects are comfortable. Good photographers do all the work for you. You should just play.

I loved this sweet girl. And though she didn't love the camera, the camera sure did love her.

Here's a creative way to use a photographer's services:

Candids during your next big event!

These parents were smart. They knew their hands would be full with party planning and entertaining, so they brought me in to shoot candids during their little's first birthday!

Let me worry about documenting your precious memories so you can stay present and in the moment!

Hearing a couple's story of love and growth and of choosing one another, inspires me to my core.

If you've never heard about The Real Me Photoshoot, you may want to start here.

It's not about the makeup.

It's about hating parts of ourselves and desperately trying to hide those parts from the world:

whether that's our aging neck, full arms, scarred face, or a story of a failed relationship.

It's about feeling like we don't measure up:

whether that's our dress size or our singleness or our career.

It's about shifting our focus to things that matter and not piecemealing our worthiness like we aren't whole beings.

The Real Me Photoshoot is about one day, when we stood in our sacred space and said "we are enough" to the camera and the photographer and everyone who would ever gaze at our photos.

It's about practicing that bravery a little each day in hopes that it gets easier, not just for us, but for each little girl who follows.

The Real Me Photoshoot is about sharing our beautifully, imperfect stories and selves with those around us, knowing that our bravery is contagious, and shame has no place in any part of our journey.

Meet Laura. She was one of the ladies from a Nashville community of women called Known, who participated in The Real Me Photoshoot.

The Real Me Photoshoot is about one day when we stood in our sacred space and said "we are enough" to the camera and the photographer and everyone who would ever gaze at our photos.

Meet Morgan. She was one of the ladies from a Nashville community of women called Known, who participated in The Real Me Photoshoot.

What's No Makeup Mondays? http://samanthanelsonphotography.com/blog/2016/4/whats-no-makeup-mondays (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=471667022867875"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

In February, I hosted a project called The Real Me Photoshoot.

The premise

Provide women a chance to be photographed with zero makeup.

Why?

For some, it was an exercise in vulnerability. Many of the women never venture out bare-faced. For others, it was simply a challenge. Could they be brave enough to participate in a photoshoot (already a daring undertaking by itself if you hate being in front of the camera) without a stylist and make-up artist? Could they overcome their own insecurities and not care about what others thought? And still for others, it was an opportunity to tell their story, as I also did a brief interview with each one during the shoot.

Am I declaring war on makeup?

No way! I am absolutely NOT against make-up, and don't intend that to be a driving force of this project. Wear make-up, don't wear make-up, it's not a reflection of your bravery or strength either way. Women are brave in multitudinous ways; I dare not limit it to the issue of make-up.

But these are the faces we wake up to each morning.

And when we look in the mirror before we apply makeup, what do we see? Overall, are we kind to the naked face staring back at us? If we aren't, if we're overly critical of our features and our aging bodies, I think it becomes easy for that sense of self-rejection and shame to spill into other areas of our lives.

"Keep unmasking the world about you."

It's a practice. Being gentle with our whole selves, what we say and how we see ourselves, is a daily practice. Knowing that your heart and your spirit and your mind and your savy and your humor and your confidence if placed on a scale in a big pile with outward appearance being on the other end, would substantially outweigh it in importance.

The loudest criticism always comes from within.

If we can learn to quiet that voice, to call it a liar when it whispers untruths, then no one else's voice will matter.

As I release the photos from The Real Me Photoshoot each Monday for the next few months, I hope the women will see themselves as we all see them...beautiful, significant, important, and capable. And that these things would swallow the other words like wrinkles, circles, blemishes, etc.

When a family trusts me to capture special life events, I feel incredibly honored.

When they ask me to do it multiple times over the years, it makes me teary-eyed.

When they drive up from from Huntsville, Alabama, to Nashville, Tennessee, for a special shoot with me, I do think about doing cartwheels.

Repeat clients are the biggest compliment I could ever receive.

Katie and Thomas, thank you for driving up and trusting me to take pictures of that beautiful belly. Call me when the baby comes...I'll make a special trip down to take pictures of those wrinkly toes for you.

It was a special week for some friends of mine. Check out their beautiful family of 14:

_DSC0239-Edit-Edit_DSC0239-Edit-Edit Mom and Dad renewed their wedding vows in an intimate ceremony at home on the exact date of their 20th year wedding anniversary.

My heart was warmed by this special night, where love was honored and family was celebrated.

_DSC0073_DSC0073 _DSC0083_DSC0083 _DSC0096_DSC0096

And boy can this family celebrate! They danced the night away, even though it was a school night. Because...well, love makes you do that.

_DSC0161_DSC0161

And did you know that love also makes you smash cake in each other's face mercilessly? My hubby and I haven't hit the 20 year mark yet, but I'm pretty sure this statement is true.

Congratulations, you two. Let's do this again in another twenty!

Huntsville, AL :: Family session http://samanthanelsonphotography.com/blog/2015/4/huntsville-al-family-session The first sun drenched day of 2015 in Huntsville, Al, and I got to spend it with this great family.

This session had no shortage of laughter or sun shiny antics.

The boys even got to hold a parrot during our shoot.

Forget what you've heard about blondes. I'm here to tell you that red heads have the most fun of all.
